LANCASTER – Mr. Herschel J. Carter, 76, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House.
A graveside service will be held at 10am on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Forest Hills Cemetery followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11am at Lakewood Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Devinney officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
Born in Rock Hill, Mr. Carter was a son of the late Waymon L. Carter, Sr. and the late Aggie Tucker Carter. He was employed with the Rock Hill Fire Department for 43 years and was a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church. He was very involved in community service especially with teaching children how to make things that would be meaningful in life. He loved playing horseshoes and won the gold in the Senior Olympics. He also enjoyed playing ping pong, cooking and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Jackie Tipton Carter and his grandson, Joseph Brandon Burgess.
Surviving are his daughters and their families, Virginia C. Burgess and her husband, Mike and their children, Coty Michael Burgess and James Hunter Burgess, all of Lancaster and Cheryl C. Sanders and her husband, Larry and their children, Joshua Drew Sanders, all of Pendleton and Jay Carter Sanders of Vermont; his brother, Waymon L. Carter, Jr. of Rock Hill; his sisters, Elizabeth Herring and Sylvia Giles, both of Rock Hill; and his special friend, Eileen Huff of Fort Mill.
