ROCK HILL – Mrs. Kathryn Galligan Culp, 76, passed away on Monday, June 26, 2017 at her home.
Kathryn was born at home in Rockmart, Georgia, on April 16, 1941. She was the third daughter of Francis and Jeanette Galligan, who later produced three sons. The family moved to Bennettsville, SC where Kathryn attended First Grade. She took a year of piano lessons at the age of five, and later played for church worship activities. She went with her sisters to Camp St. Mary near Beaufort, SC for vacation and Catholic education. The family moved to Gastonia, NC where she enrolled in St. Michael’s School for second grade through her eighth grade graduation. She then attended Sacred Heart Academy in Belmont, NC from which she graduated high school in 1958.
Following graduation, she enrolled in Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte, NC, where both of her sisters had graduated. After working for one year at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, she entered Sacred Heart Convent in Belmont, NC, where she spent the next thirty years as a Sister of Mercy in various ministries. Her advanced education included a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC; a Master’s degree in Nursing from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill; and a Master of Management in Business from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She worked at St. Joseph’s hospital in Asheville, NC, but most of her nursing career took place at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, where she served in various positions, including Director of Nursing. She assisted with the development and opening of Mercy Hospital South in Pineville, NC, where she was Assistant Administrator, and later transferred to Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, where she served as Vice President for both hospitals until she retired in 1992.
She left the religious community in 1992 and in January 1993 married Joe Culp, a Professional Engineer from Rock Hill, SC who also worked at Mercy Hospital. The couple lived in Rock Hill, and were married for 24 years. They were active members of Trinity Nazarene Church, formerly West Main Church of the Nazarene. As an avid supporter of Missions, Kathryn held leadership positions at the local and district levels, and served on Work and Witness Teams to Africa and Panama. She was instrumental in raising money to fund a well for Swaziland, Africa. Together with her husband, Joe, she loved participating in and helping to develop the Nazarene Campground in Batesburg, SC, and sponsored a child in Bangladesh.
Kathryn is survived by her loving spouse and his four adult children: Bill Culp, Jr of Salisbury, NC, Pamela C. Hasian of Fort Mill, SC, Jean C. Summey and Jon Culp of Rock Hill, and their children; two sisters, Sister Therese Galligan, R.S.M. of Belmont, NC, and Maureen G. Schachner of Charlotte, NC; two brothers, John Galligan of Burlington, NC, and Dan Galligan of Gainesville, FL. A third brother, Francis B. Galligan, Jr., was a West Point graduate, and was killed in a helicopter accident in 1980 at Ft. Hood, TX.
